  DT Investigation Samira Shabsogh Design situation  On a visit to the Families and Friends Society of Persons With Disabilities, the grade 10 DT students were required to take notes and be inspired for creating a product that would benefit people with disabilities. The range of people at the center was very broad. The mentally and physically challenged people aged from 0-30 are treated in different ways as each person is challenged differently. The most common disability in the center is Down syndrome. Most of the students are artistic and enjoy arts and crafts. In the center, the students have many  learning games but in my opinion the games are not that fun, so maybe upgrading them to make them seem more exciting. For example taking a look at the figure on the right with the teddy bear clocks. If they were made from wood and a bit bigger, it would be easier to play with it as the game is to tell what’s the time but turning the clock hands in the correct directions and on wood, we can make the clock more colorful using paint. By creating this in wood, it would give the students the opportunity to move around the class while playing with it. Another thing that might make the life of the students and the teachers easily is to build like a cupboard with drawers or shelves, one for each student, for them to put their toiletries in as by taking a look to the figure on the left, the ones they have are not even enough that some have to share, and because it’s easier to keep these things closer to the bathroom than in the classroom. When we were in the school, we also interviewed the principal of the center, Miss Ruweida. This is a compilation of all the information Miss Ruweida told us: In the center, there are two sections, one for the younger children who are between the ages of 4 and 9 and these children all suffer from down syndrome, which is a mental disability, and another for the older people, between the ages of 15 and 30, who have both mental and physical disabilities, one of which is cerebral palsy. There is also a home program that teaches parents how to take care of the children who are under the age of 4 and how to start integrating them into society. All of the people who receive care there are often older physically than they are mentally, though the age difference depends on the disability. For example, a child who is 9 years physically may be 7 years old mentally. The training and care they receive at the center helps to decrease that age gap. The center is currently in the process of rehabilitation rooms to help with the treatment. The adults prefer spending their time in the art room where they basically reuse and redesign things. They use wooden boxes and decorate them using mosaics. They have games with numbers, months, colors, and snakes and ladders. What they needed were easels, thicker brushes, a globe of  the earth, and any games to help with motor skills. If there were any words or anything then they would need to be in Arabic. They had a sort of resting room, where they can come in to watch educational videos and read stories that are both comical and moral. Simplicity is key. The children all have Down syndrome, meaning they have 47 chromosomes as opposed to 46 and they are very social. They basically learn how to function in society. They learn simple things like how to use zippers, button, laces, and they learn about different colors and sizes and numbers. They learn the alphabet. Anything created for them should not have sharp edges; it should be small and continuously useful, not just for the first time. It should be colorful but not too bright as that could harm the eyes. We also spoke with Mr. Mahmoud, the workshop technician. He told us all the different types of materials we have in the workshop. They include: Wood: MDF, block board, plywood, chipboard (not recommended) Acrylic: thickness is 2mm Plastic sheet Metal sheet, some very thin copper. Sponge Polystyrene Felt All the different types of saw Router (use this for flash card) Molds using vacuum forming machine The joining techniques we can use are: Screws (many different sizes and lengths) Nails (many different sizes and lengths) Glue (many different types including waterproof glue and fabric glue)
