Lutherdenkmal (Luther Monument), Worms, Rheineland, Germany Text: “Here I stand. I can do no other, God help me: Amen” The Feast of the Reformation Sunday, October 26, 2014  2 T HE F EAST OF THE R  EFORMATION   H OLY C OMMUNION   T HE F EAST OF THE R  EFORMATION   Philipp Nicolai, Johann Herrmann, Paul Gerhardt Sunday, October 26, 2014 + 9:30 a.m.  JUSTIFIED BY GRACE THROUGH FAITH    On this day we celebrate the heart of our faith: the Gospel of Christ—the Good News—that makes us  free! Though we give thanks for the events of the sixteenth-century Reformation that brought renewal to the church, we pray that the Holy Spirit would continue to unite the church today in its  proclamation and witness to the world. In the waters of Baptism we are made one body; we pray for the day that all Christians will also be one at the Lord's Table.   Philipp Nicolai, died 1608; Johann Heermann, died 1647; Paul Gerhardt, died 1676; hymnwriters  These great hymnwriters all worked in seventeenth-century Germany in times of war and plague.  Nicolai, a pastor, lost 1,300 parishioners to plague, 170 in one week. He wrote O Morning Star, how  fair and bright and Wake, awake, for night is flying. Heermann's hymns, including Ah, holy Jesus, often express the emotions of faith. Gerhardt, perhaps the greatest Lutheran hymnwriter, was a  pastor in Berlin.   + + + + + + + + + + + + GATHERING   The Holy Spirit gathers us together as the people of God    The GATHERING MUSIC The WELCOME & ANNOUNCEMENTS The   BRIEF ORDER FOR CONFESION & FORGIVENESS   The sign of the cross may be made by all in remembrance of Holy Baptism as the presiding minister begins.   In the name of the Father, and of the + Son, and of the Holy Spirit.  Amen   Almighty God, to whom all hearts are open, all desires known, and from  whom no secrets are hid: Cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you and worthily magnify your holy name, through Jesus Christ our Lord.  Amen    T HE F EAST OF THE R  EFORMATION  3 On this Reformation Sunday, let us confess to Almighty God our part in tearing the body of Christ, our responsibility for continuing the brokenness of the Church, our blindness in assuming that a divided Church is God’s will, our pride in thinking that all necessary truth is already in our possession, our self-centered regard only for ourselves. Let us confess our sins against God and our neighbors.   Silence for reflection and self-examination. Most merciful God,  we confess that we are in bondage to sin and cannot free ourselves.  We have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you  with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. For the sake of your Son, Jesus Christ, have mercy on us. Forgive us, renew us, and lead us, so that we may delight in your will and walk in  your ways, to the glory of your holy name. Amen   The presiding minister addresses the assembly.  Almighty God, in his mercy, has given his Son to die for us and, for his sake, forgives us all our sins. As a called and ordained minister of the Church of Christ, and by his authority, I therefore declare to you the entire forgiveness of all your sins, in the name of the Father, and of the + Son, and of the Holy Spirit.  Amen    4 T HE F EAST OF THE R  EFORMATION   The assembly faces the Cross as it enters the nave. The   GATHERING HYMN   Lord, Keep Us Steadfast In Your Word    The   GREETING & PRAYER OF THE DAY The presiding minister and the assembly greet each other  . The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all.  And also with you. The KYRIE  (“Lord, have mercy”)
