  HENOCH-SCHÖNLEIN PURPURA  INTRODUCTION  a.k.a. Anaphylactoid Purpura   Allergic purpura <   Autoimmune Vascular Purpura <  Acquired Alterations of Vessel Wall Structure  It classically follows an upper respiratory infection , but has been associated with foods  and drugs , insect   bites , and vaccination  Children are most frequently affected:  Between ages 3-7 years old  Boys are twice affected than girls  Purpuric episodes begin and subside spontaneously (lasting about 4 weeks)    PATHOGENESIS   A disorder which results from an autoimmune process that is not clearly understood  Nonthrombocytopenic purpura :  Patients develop vascular inflammation due to  immune disturbance :  IgA, IgG, and C3 are deposited in the cutaneous and renal vasculature   Antigen-antibody complexes cause immune injury to the vessel wall  SYMPTOMS
