Study Guide to be used in conjunction with The Cross and The Sanctuary Part 2 Sermon on
The Cross and The Sanctuary  –   Part 2 Study Guide Review You‟ll remember from our study last we ek that Jesus was referred to as the Lamb of God. John 1:29 “The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him, and said, “Behold! The ___________ of God who takes  _________ the ________ of the world!”  The only way to decipher the meaning of the lamb was through the sanctuary. Leviticus 4:32-35 „If he brings a ___________ as his sin offering… Then he shall lay his ___________ on the head of the sin offering, and kill it as a sin offering at the place where they kill the burnt offering. The __________ shall take some of the blood of the sin offering with his finger, put it on the horns of the altar of burnt offering, and pour all the remaining blood at the base of the altar. “The sanctuary is the interpretative  ___________ to understanding Christ.”   Today’s Text: John 19:30 “He said, “It is  ______________  !” And bowing His head, He gave up His spirit.”   Thesis question: If it was finished at the cross, why are we still here 2,000 years after the cross? This can only be understood through the interpretative key of the sanctuary. In Eden, Adam and Eve were able to have face-to-face open communion with God. Through sin, that communion was  broken. Thus the plan of salvation was instituted. The sanctuary illustrates God‟s plan to bring us  back to Eden restored  –   where we can have that face-to-face encounter with God again.  As you can see from the diagram there are three compartments in the sanctuary: The Courtyard The Holy Place The Most Holy Place The Sanctuary illustrates that there are ________ phases in the plan of salvation. The Courtyard contained two articles of furniture: the laver and the altar of burnt offering. The place where the lamb was killed was at the altar of burnt offering. Leviticus 4:32-35 „If he brings a ___________ as his sin offering… Then he shall lay his hands on the head of the sin offering, and kill it as a sin offering at the place where they kill the _________ offering. When Jesus died on the cross  –   He completed the sacrifice in the ________________. This is what He finished at the cross. He had paid the penalty for sin. Man, because of sin, deserved death. ( “ The wages of sin is death. ”  Romans 6:23) Salvation for man was assured. Yet, there was still more to be done by Christ for the restoration of man. What compartment of the sanctuary did Jesus enter upon His ascension? Revelation 1:13-18 “ Then I turned to see the voice that spoke with me. And having turned I saw seven golden lamp stands, and in the midst of the seven _____________ One like the Son of Man, clothed with a garment down to the feet and girded about the chest with a golden band …   “Do not be afraid; I am the First and the Last. I am He who lives, and was dead, and behold, I am alive forevermore. Amen. ”  In the book of Revelation, Jesus in seen by John in front of the candlestick in the Holy Place of the heavenly sanctuary. Upon his ascension, Jesus went into the second compartment of the Sanctuary in the Holy Place. Hebrews 9:11-12  –    “ But when Christ came as high ____________ of the good things that have come to be, passing through the greater and more perfect tabernacle not made by hands, that is, not belonging to this creation, he entered once for all into the tabernacle, not with the blood of goats and calves but with his own ___________, thus obtaining eternal redemption. ”  Paul uses the interpretative key of the sanctuary to show that Christ is our High Priest in the heavenly sanctuary. Thus the sanctuary becomes the key for understanding what Christ did at the cross as the Lamb of God and also what Christ is doing in the sanctuary as our High Priest  . When Jesus went to heaven, He entered the _______ Place in the Sanctuary to continue in the plan of salvation. The Courtyard Deliverance from the Penalty of Sin Justification The Holy Place Deliverance from the Power of Sin Sanctification The Most Holy Place Deliverance from the Presence of Sin Glorification When Jesus died on the cross, He saved us from the penalty of sin. This is justification; this is our imputed righteousness. Jesus ministers on our behalf in the heavenly sanctuary, as our high priest to save us from the power of sin. This is sanctification; this is our imparted righteousness. Both our imparted and imputed righteousness is obtained by faith . This is the good news of righteousness by faith. Won‟t you accept Christ‟s righteousness by faith today?
